Artwork by Matthew Geist

I studied Printmaking and painting at Savannah College of Art and Design where I fell in love with lithography, etching, monoprints, and all of the printmaking methods. I also have a background and minor in painting. In my recent work, I have combined my love for paper and painting.

I explore the use of paper collages and layers of paint while sanding to spontaneous compositions that show themselves throughout the process.

Through layering and subtraction, I look for hints of inspiration that spontaneously show through as I work with color and the texture of the paper. I approach my monoprints in the same way, through experimentation and color layering to find a composition that I am satisfied with.

For this diptic I painted a deep blue on bristol board and layered rice paper over the top, then sanded through the ricepaper layer to reveal a repeated but different composition creating a diptych as one piece. It was framed with a 5/8 oxidized silver Nurre Caxton frame and floated on a soft white Crescent museum rag mat.
